Singapore's Sembawang Park encompasses a large portion of what was once Her Majesty’s Naval Base Singapore. The park is bordered on one side by fences blocking from view a remaining portion of the former base, which now hosts the U.S. Navy Logistics Group Command for the Western Pacific (COMLOGWESTPAC) and the Navy Region Center Singapore (NRCS).
This space occupied by the U.S. Navy is a small but important node in an expansive network. COMLOGWESTPAC coordinates logistics, maintenance, and refueling for U.S. Navy ships of the 7th Fleet across more than 51 million square miles, including at military and commercial repair facilities in Guåhan (Guam), Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
COMLOGWESTPAC moved to Sembawang in 1992, from its original home in Subic Bay, Philippines, after the Philippines Senate voted against renewing the U.S. base agreement there. Where most US forces moved to Okinawa or Guåhan, COMLOGWESTPAC landed here, in facilities originally developed by the British Royal Navy (1938-1971), then occupied successively by ANZUK (the tripartite force composed of Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, 1971-1974) and New Zealand Force South East Asia (1974-1989), who vacated it three years before the U.S. was suddenly in want of a forward logistics site in the Pacific. The U.S. portion of Sembawang’s dockyard, as well as the housing occupied by U.S. Navy families, has never been under solely Singaporean sovereignty.
The park’s colonial-era mansion, Beaulieu House, predates the Royal Navy Base and is now a private restaurant.
